A Prayer to Bless the Lord

How do we bless the Lord?

We read about people desiring to bless the Lord through the Bible. In Psalm 63, David declares he will bless the Lord as long as he lives! This seems like a bold statement, given how challenging it can be to discern whether we are fully following God’s will for our lives. David’s writings give us some insight into what a life lived as worship unto the Lord looks like.

David first describes blessing the Lord with palms up and open to the lord in prayer. This signifies that he has absolutely nothing without God. His ability to produce on his own as a leader, a man, and even as a King is futile without God. Next, he offers his every need to the Lord in prayer.

It’s interesting that our pausing to ask for help is one way we can bless the Lord. This illuminates how relational God is. All He wants is for us to pause and tell Him how our day is. To share with Him our questions. To present Him with our needs. To share with Him our inadequacies. This is how we can bless the Lord.

Next, in verses 5-8, David declares that he will remember God. He will think of Him. He will cling to Him. He will sing praises to Him. God desires us to praise Him. Our Father delights in our worship. He invites us to consider His mighty and creative ways. To stand in awe at His creation and plan for our lives.

Honestly, it’s His joy and our delight to know God and to make Him known. Every new random fact we marvel at is a chance to bless the Lord. When we create, as the Creator does, we glorify Him. The key is giving Him the credit instead of allowing our pride to blind us from seeing His goodness and glory.

At the end of chapter 63, David declares his great trust in the Lord. In verses 9-11, he boasts that those who seek to kill him will be destroyed, and, in the end, God will get the glory. If we want to bless the Lord, we must trust in Him with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. We have to follow Him (Proverbs 3:5-6).

It seems that God wants us. David was described as a man after God’s own heart. He was not a perfect man, but he relentlessly pursued the Lord. That’s what God wants from us: hearts, minds, and souls passionately seeking the Lord.

Let’s Pray:

God,

We want to bless you for as long as we live. We desire for our lives to be a pleasing aroma to you. That we would end this life and get to hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” We come to you with open hands. We lift our palms up and open to you, declaring we are nothing without you! We need you. We cast our cares over to you, confessing our sins and asking for your grace to wash over us.

As we go about our day, we remember you. We invite you into our routine. We take time to consider your provision, your good gifts, and to stand in awe of your amazing grace. As we lie down to bed, we think of you. We cling to your promises. We banish the lies that want to crowd our thoughts, but instead consider your goodness and mercy. Our hearts delight in you!

Let us live with a deep trust in you. In all our ways, may we acknowledge you. When we are tempted to be afraid, let us remember your faithfulness. Let us recount the ways you have shown up for us! How you have provided for us time and time again. We lean on you and seek to be obedient to your calling.

We love you. Let all we do be a blessing to you! Amen.
